Free Travel Games For Road Trips–Part 1

This is the first part of a 2-Part series about Free Travel Games. You can read Part 2 here.

Are you planning a vacation or road trip anytime soon? Travel games make traveling with kids so much easier because it gives them something to do. The whole family can play them together, including the driver for most of them (you just need to tell them what to look for).

In the past, before our long road trips, I have scoured the internet looking for free games to print off and take with us. Talk about time consuming! This year I decided to make some of my own…and share them with you.

I made three games (2 of the 3 have a couple of variations of the same game, so you’re really getting 5 games to play) and three activity sheets (actually 6 because I made 3 that may appeal more to girls and 3 that may appeal more to boys). So when you download the FREE Travel Games printable pack at the bottom of this post you will be able to print off 11 travel games/activities for your kids to do on a road trip. Yippee!

Scroll to the bottom of this post and you will find a button to click and download the entire Travel Games Pack.

Game #1 License Plate Match Up

Travel Games License Plate Match Up

Download this game and the entire Travel Games Pack at the bottom of this post.

This game tests your kids’ knowledge of the 50 states and capitals. The capitals are listed on the left hand side license plates and your child will write the name of the state that matches that capital on the right hand side license plates.

What a fun way to practice and review the states and capitals! I plan to try this out myself and see how many I can remember.

Game #2 ABC Travel Games

Travel Games ABC

Download this game and the entire Travel Games Pack at the bottom of this post.

There are two versions of the ABC travel game. One where you and/or your kids look for things that begin with each letter of the alphabet as you are driving along. You can decide if you will need to go in alphabetical order or just jot them down as you see them. Both ways can be fun and challenging.

In the second version you and/or your kids look for words on road signs that begin with each letter of the alphabet and write them down. Again, you can decide if you want to find them in alphabetical order or just want to write them down as you see them.

Game #3 Road Sign Scavenger Hunt

Travel Games Road Signs

Download this game and the entire Travel Games Pack at the bottom of this post.

These scavenger hunts (there are two different ones) are the kind your kids can do from the comfort of your car. Just keep your eyes peeled for the road signs pictured on the paper to appear so you can mark them off as you find them.

Laminate it and use dry erase markers if you wish to use it multiple times on your trip, or on various trips.

Game #4 Activity Sheets

Travel Games Activity Sheets

Download this game and the entire Travel Games Pack at the bottom of this post.

There are a total of six activity sheets. Three of them may be better suited for girls, and the other three may be better suited for boys. I’m not sure that any are super girly or boyish, but there are a couple of options, just in case.

There is a coloring sheet, a doodle sheet, and a sheet for writing notes, thoughts, a fun or silly story, or anything at all. These sheets give your kids’ creative side a chance to come out.

Traveling in the car can be challenging with kids, especially long road trips. I hope these travel games will be useful to your family and help your road trip to be more enjoyable.
